Why this matters

Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax will soon change how self-employed people and landlords report income to HMRC. From April 2026, many will be required to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates using HMRC-compatible software.

Despite this, recent research shows that many people are still unclear on what MTD actually involves and whether it applies to them.
