From April 2026, millions of sole traders and landlords will be required to keep digital records and send updates to HMRC every quarter using Making Tax Digital compatible software.
That means you won’t be able to use the free tax return tool on the HMRC website anymore — but with Zempler and Coconut, you’re already covered.
However you choose to sign up, with or without Zempler, you’ll be ready for Making Tax Digital and your tax returns will be a whole lot easier.

You can start with Coconut in two ways:
Create your Coconut account
You’ll then be prompted to apply for a Zempler bank account
Once both accounts are live, your Coconut plan will be upgraded to free – and will stay that way for up to 24 months, as long as your Zempler account remains connected.
A minimum £100 deposit into your new Zempler account, paid within 7 days of account opening is required to claim your free Coconut plan.
